Being married to a teacher of twenty-six years, I know first hand the problems our schools face. The current foundation formula used to figure education funding is not adequate or equitable and is based on local wealth and property tax. I am in favor of reworking the formula so that rural schools get the education dollars based on student need. I am interested in the quality of education for ALL students and that should not depend on whether a child has a shopping mall in the district in order to get much-needed funds.
Because I have placed education as a top priority, I have supported increases in K-12 funding all four years that I served in the House of Representatives even during difficult times for the state of Missouri. I will continue to work to make certain that increased funding gets to the teacher and the classroom and is not withheld or diverted to other state agencies. To make that happen, I will continue to work to eliminate needless regulations and requirements from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education that create more administrative costs to our local schools.
One key issue facing Missouri and the nation as a whole is the future accessibility to health care. Our state must work to keep health care affordable and accessible to all Missourians. The state should give deductions and expand incentives to employees who provide health insurance to their employees. Additionally, the legislature should look to expand the Missouri Senior Rx Program so that no Missouri citizens do without needed prescription drugs.
I was an adamant supporter of Amendment 2, the marriage amendment. Marriage is an institution created by God and has been used as the foundation of all societies down through history and time. I feel that it is very important to the state of Missouri as well as the nation as a whole. To ensure procreation and provide a stable healthy environment for children to be nurtured, the institution of marriage should be upheld.
I have been endorsed by Missouri Right to Life – the leading pro-life advocacy organization in the state of Missouri representing over 90,000 pro-life Missourians. I consider the endorsement a great honor and testament to the morals and beliefs I was raised on and have passed on to my children and that I have used when representing our most vulnerable citizens in Jefferson City. I take this issue very seriously and will continue to working to ensure that those who cannot speak for themselves have a voice in state government.
To advance economic development for our area, the legislature needs to continue to broaden value-added agriculture projects into the areas of cotton, rice, melons, and livestock as well as ethanol and bio-diesel. Additionally, there are exciting opportunities in the area of the Life Sciences where plants are produced that will yield medicines. This area with its rich farmland and high tech farmers can be a leader in the area of producing plants that can be used to derive medicine.
Additionally, we must pass legislation dealing with litigation reform that will assist in making Missouri 's work climate more favorable for companies to do business so that existing jobs will be retained and the state will be more attractive to prospective business and industry.
The legislature needs to also increase job training funding to our local higher education institutions such as Three Rivers Community College and Southeast Missouri State Universit . They can work in conjunction with our local industries and businesses to enhance the skills of the employees. This increased funding can be used to update our workers in electronic and computer technology – whatever the need be.
Finally, training needs to be used to help individuals who are not pursuing a college degree to prepare them for the workplace. By giving advanced training in electronics, computers, hydraulics and other areas, they will have the skills needed to perform at high levels in our local industries and businesses.
